Under Rocks
Description
The rocks lie 3km south of Rotherfield. It is possible to park just up past the house, Twitts Ghyll, in a lay-by. Do not park in front of the house as this may cause future access problems. A footpath starts opposite the big house, by the side of the small house. The path is very overgrown. It runs between fields for about 450m. You reach a gap in the undergrowth, half way down a field. Climb over the wooden fence at this point and walk across the field down a slope to another wooden fence, in to a wooded area, the crag should appear on the right. The rope swing is on the right just after the first small wall, then the steep wall appears. Please stay on the path as long as possible, so as not to annoy the farmer. This is probably the most different sandstone outcrop. Mostly due to its secluded nature. The main feature of the outcrop is the tall steep, pot-holed wall, which gives some fine hard routes. There is a smaller wall on the right that gives some routes in the easier grades. The rock can be in condition all year, but does take a while to dry out. Recently a lot of fresh carvings have appeared in the main wall. I find this extremely annoying, as the rock is going to disappear quite fast enough without this sort of behaviour. It gets even more annoying when they cannot spell!!! The rocks are on private land but the owners are not known, and no problems have occurred as of yet. There is an added bonus of these rocks, a large rope swing. It is made up of a number of different bits of rope and goes off a steep bank allowing a lot of air to be achieved.
